Bates numbering for legal documents
Bates numbering gives every page in a document set its own sequential reference, so any page can be cited precisely in correspondence, depositions and court bundles — ABC-000001, ABC-000002 and so on.
Prefix
Add a prefix identifying the matter, the producing party or the batch, such as a case reference or client code.
Starting number
Continue a sequence across several productions by starting where the last one finished, instead of restarting at one.
Zero padding
Numbers are padded with leading zeros to a fixed width — six digits by default, adjustable from one to twelve — so references sort correctly and look uniform.
Follow the applicable protocol
Courts, regulators and firms often specify the format and position of Bates stamps. Check the practice direction or discovery protocol that governs your matter.
Confidential by default
Numbering is applied in your browser, so privileged material is never uploaded.
