Why iPhone photos arrive as HEIC

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it can take up to half the space of a JPEG at similar quality. Plenty of Windows programs, older Android apps and upload forms still refuse it, which is why JPEG remains the safest format for sharing.

Conversion quality

Each photo is re-encoded as a JPEG at 90% quality — close enough to the original that the difference is hard to see, while keeping the file a sensible size to email or upload.

One photo per run

The converter takes a single HEIC file at a time. To stop the problem at the source, set your iPhone to Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible, and new photos will be saved as JPEG.

How the photo is handled

HEIC is decoded on our server rather than in your browser. The file travels over HTTPS, is converted in memory and returned, and is not stored. Our hosting limits uploads to 4.5 MB, which covers typical phone photos but not every high-resolution image.
