Getting the words out of a PDF

Scanned documents

Extraction needs a real text layer. A scanned page is a picture with no text behind it, so it returns little or nothing. For scans, run the page images through the image-to-text OCR tool instead.

Columns and tables

Plain text drops layout. On multi-column pages, lines from neighboring columns can come out interleaved, and tables lose their grid — check anything laid out that way.
