Resizing without distortion

Enter a new width, a new height, or both. Leave one blank and it is worked out from the original proportions, so the picture is scaled rather than stretched.

When to fill in both numbers

Setting width and height together forces the image to exactly that size. If those numbers do not match the original's shape, faces and text come out squashed or stretched — so set both only when a platform demands exact pixels and your source already has that aspect ratio.

Shrinking is safe, enlarging is not

Making an image smaller throws away detail you will not miss at the new size. Making it bigger cannot invent detail that was never captured, so a 400-pixel photo enlarged to 2,000 pixels will look soft however it is resized.

Format is preserved

A PNG comes back as a PNG with its transparency intact, and a JPEG stays a JPEG. To change format as well, run the result through the image converter.
