What flattening does
Flattening turns a PDF's fillable form fields into ordinary page content. The values you typed stay exactly where they are, but the boxes can no longer be edited, cleared or tabbed through.
When to flatten
Before sending a completed application, contract or tax form, so the recipient sees precisely what you filled in and nothing can be changed by accident. Some upload portals also reject files that still contain live form fields.
PDFs without form fields
This works on interactive form fields only. A document with none — a scan, or something printed, signed and scanned back in — comes out unchanged.
Comments and annotations
Sticky notes, highlights and other annotations are not form fields and are left as they are.
Keep an editable copy
The flattened file cannot be turned back into a form, so save the fillable version too in case an answer needs to change.
