Understanding an image's size

See an image's exact width and height in pixels, its aspect ratio, megapixel count and file size — worth checking before uploading anywhere with strict size rules.

Pixels are not file size

Pixel dimensions describe how much detail an image holds; file size depends on the format and compression. The same 4000 × 3000 photo can be under 1 MB as a JPEG or many megabytes as a PNG.

Aspect ratio

Width divided by height decides whether an image fits a slot without cropping — square for profile pictures, 16:9 for video thumbnails.

Megapixels and printing

Megapixels are width × height divided by a million. As a rough guide, printing at 300 pixels per inch needs about 1,800 × 1,200 pixels for a 6 × 4 inch print.
